It’s Fall and it’s Fun! The Adventure Jam at West Point Dam is Saturday, Sept. 11, 2010. Growing every year, new “mystery challenges” and a military-style obstacle course have been added to this outdoor competition which includes 12 miles of mountain biking on rugged but manageable trails, 5 miles of trekking and 2 miles of team canoeing or individual kayaking, depending on your registration category. All funds raised from the event are re-invested in trail improvements.

Three-person mixed or single-gender teams are permitted. The minimum age for participation is 13 and advanced registration is available at www.westpointadventurerace.com. If you just want to see what adventuring racing is all about, you can register as an individual and come give it a try. You’ll meet kindred souls who love the outdoors and love to compete in a friendly environment.

Canoes and kayaks can be put in the water at 7:00 a.m. All participants must Read More→

Times are tough. We all have something to worry about, but providing our children with the tools to achieve a quality education should not be one of those things. That’s why Greater Valley Group (GVG), a developer of Greater Valley real estate, teamed up with Lanett City Schools Superintendent Phillip Johnson and other community advocates to provide support to the Lanett area’s first “Rock-the-Block” party in early August.

Hosted by Refuge Point Church and sponsored by members of the community, the Rock-the-Block party offered games, inflatables, live music, give-aways and free food. However, the main attraction of the event was the free school supplies and back-packs provided to students to help them return fully-prepared to the classroom.

Sponsors and individuals donated time, money, and Read More→

Many of us in the Greater Valley Area are counting the days until the opening kick-off of this year’s college football season.  Fifteen days for those who aren’t counting.  The Auburn Tigers are ranked No. 23 in USA Today’s preseason poll and appear ready for the challenge to compete for SEC supremacy.

The Tigers open their season against Arkansas State on Saturday, September 4 at 6 p.m. CT at Jordan-Hare Stadium, just 25 minutes from our two hotels near Auburn, The Hampton Inn and Suites in Lanett and the newly remodeled Holiday Inn Express in Valley.  Convenience and a direct, easy drive south on I-85 puts you close to the action without the heavy game-day traffic. Making reservations is easy by visiting the Hampton Inn or Holiday Inn websites, or calling 334-576-5400 for the Hampton Inn and Suites, Lanett, or 334-756-2000 for the Holiday Inn Express.  Book early as rooms this close to Auburn fill quickly on game weekends.

In late July, the Harris County, Georgia Chamber of Commerce hosted its quarterly membership meeting at the GVG New Home Discovery Center in West Point, Ga.  Seating 79 members for dinner, the Discovery Center was crowded but comfortable as members mixed and mingled before and after the delectable dinner and featured presentation by Matthew Fowler of the Georgia Department of Transportation.

GVG’s President and CEO, Walter Shealy, revealed the capabilities of the high-tech theater-style facility to local business members and community leaders, many of whom were enjoying their first ~ but not last ~ visit to the Discovery Center.  The inter-active, touch-screen technology allows any presenter or agent to conduct tailored, virtual tours of the Greater Valley Area and West Point real estate, including the new home communities of Quail Run and Riverside Estates, the apartment communities at The Venue and the hotel properties.  The comprehensive look at regional development is a unique asset helpful to newcomers, realtors, investors, and Read More→

Animals of all shapes and sizes are abandoned and abused daily, creating a cycle of homeless pets in shelters or roaming the streets.

Greater Valley Group is excited to donate $500 to help fund an education program coordinated by the Chattahoochee Humane Society. The program will reach children in Chambers County elementary schools through engaging activities such as coloring books, classroom programs and assemblies. Additionally, GVG donated $250 toward the annual Beach Bash.

“Education is the answer for many problems,” said Sharon Hawkins, an active volunteer and vice president of the board of directors for the Chattahoochee Humane Society. “We discussed many options and came to the conclusion that we need to reach children at an early age and help them understand that animals need our care and that pets are a real part of the family.” Read More→

Tomato sandwich day at the Farmers Market at the historic Langdale Mill in Valley, Ala., was hugely popular and successful. There’s nothing like a succulent tomato sandwich with fresh-from-the-field tomatoes picked at just the right time. The sandwich crew — including Walter Shealy, President and CEO of Greater Valley Group and Melinda Edwards of the Hampton Inn & Suites — was mobbed with customers, many of whom came back for more of the tasty treats.

Local farmers bring fresh vegetables, fruit and fun to the communities of the Greater Valley Area every Friday afternoon from 4 – 7 pm. Catering to the after-work shopper who wants the very best locally grown produce and the sweetest watermelon and corn to enjoy over the weekend, the farmers and vendors bring peaches, watermelon, berries, jams, corn, snap peas, okra, and virtually every summer fruit and vegetable imaginable.   Read More→

Relay for Life a Success

Posted by: Jeanne Charbonneau | Comments (0)

The Chambers County Relay For Life was a huge success raising in excess of $116,000 for cancer research and patient care support programs.  Greater Valley Group, headquartered in West Point, Ga., was the entertainment sponsor for this recent all-night event held at Ram Stadium in Valley, Ala.

Large and small teams — 38 in total — set up camp sites around the track providing food, games, activities and conversation for the constant flow of walkers and runners circling the field. With over 300 registered participants on various teams, the crowd size was estimated to be in excess of 500 during the evening. The solemn luminaria ceremony included treasured photos of loved ones lost to cancer and survivors projected on a large screen.  The names of the individuals were quietly read aloud as the pictures were viewed in silence by everyone in attendance.

With the conclusion of the luminaria ceremony, the music cranked back up and the party resumed.  All over the country, Relay For Life events focus on three tenets:  Celebrate.  Remember.  Fight Back.  Celebrating the medical advances made in the fight against cancer, and celebrating the loved ones Read More→
